He worked as an assistant director in theater and as an illustrator and sketch artist in the press and film before directing his own films. His work has been screened at numerous film festivals around the world, among them Amiens, Trieste, Toronto and Sundance. His short animated film El héroe won the Palme dOr for Best Short Film at Cannes. El crimen del Padre Amaro was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Film category. He has received several Ariels (including Best Screenplay, Best Film and Best Director) and the Coral Award at the Havana Film Festival, among other honors. Carrera studied communications at the Universidad Iberoamericana and film at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC).
